Job Description:
What’s the role?
The Sr Process Engineer provides process engineering support to the 24x7 Production organization to ensure excellence in Process Safety, Reliability, Margin/Energy Optimization, and Cost Management. The role works closely with the Production Team to provide technical assurance to unit operations and ensure production plan delivery. In addition, this role plays a key role in Continuous Improvement, Project Development, and Turnaround Planning and Execution. The current Sr Process Engineer assignment is to support the Scotford Refinery as the NHT/CCR/GRU Operations Support Engineer.
The following are the primary accountabilities for the Sr. Process Engineer:
Performs proactive technical monitoring of the designated process unit against the safe operating envelope and LTO limits for the process unit and documents the performance through defined monthly and quarterly KPI reports.
Works with the designated technical experts to implement and utilize the current adopted monitoring standard for the site. The purpose of this activity is to understand unit and equipment performance, identify threats, troubleshoot performance and reliability gaps, and identify opportunities for improvement. This activity feeds into multiple core operations, maintenance and assurance-based work processes and deliverables.
Provides technical expertise and guidance to ensure designated process units are operated in a safe, environmentally sound and reliable manner in accordance with the license to operate and the defined safe operating envelope.
Provides technical expertise and optimization recommendations to support delivery of the business plan, including feed and product quality specifications and energy/cost efficiency.
Provides monthly, quarterly and annual input for production accounting and regulatory reporting (i.e. Solomon, yield reporting, flaring, chemical costs, etc).
Identify and communicate to the technical, production and maintenance communities any threats to process safety and license to operate limits as well as threats to meeting the current production plan, annual business plan, turnaround cycle, equipment plans or maintenance plans.
Leads unit alarm reviews and supports alarm management activities as per ESP process.
Utilizes fact-based root cause analysis (e.g. RCA, KT, Causal etc) to investigate, define and troubleshoot threats. Assists as appropriate in ensuring solutions to problems are acceptable from a technical integrity point of view.
Provides process engineering support for operating problems or seeks process engineering support where appropriate. This will require some off-hours support during plant upsets and emergencies.
Follows up on assigned incident investigations, actions, and findings from various work processes.
May coordinate the efforts of other technical disciplines and specialist support to resolve threats or to support planned shutdowns, start-ups, turn around activities or other significant events.
Documents threats and supports reliability with driving accountability, threat resolution and optimization to ensure continuity and prevent re-occurrence of the same issues. Documents are to be maintained in appropriate formats and filing for future use.
MOC approver/reviewer for all Plant Changes affecting the unit. The OSE role in MOC is as both a unit expert/idea approver and a process engineer/discipline reviewer. MOC focal for short term (i.e., temporary repair or impairment) or small project changes.
Provides technical leadership to turnaround and major maintenance activities including scope collection, scope review, scope challenge, shut down procedures and start-up procedures.
Unit technical lead during turnarounds and major maintenance activities and is accountable to the technical integrity of the event.
Responsible for generating Investment Proposals for unit outage/major maintenance/turnaround related activities (i.e., catalyst replacement). Supports projects from front end definition through to execute
Skills & Requirements
What we need from you -
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Chemical engineer (Professional engineer). APEGA designation or ability to achieve.
Minimum seven (7) years relevant experience in refining/petrochemical industry. Technical experience in chemical process technologies, and process engineering experience providing direct support to manufacturing operations desired.
Knowledge and application of safety methodology and reviews (Process Hazards Analysis, Layers of Protection Analysis, etc.), including safeguarding.
Experience with plant changes and Management of Change process.
The individual must be proficient in the use of spreadsheets, computer and simulation models.
